The burden of council taxes hardly seems to diminish as the years pass. Having an outstanding debt can result in attachments to wages and other unpleasantries that can quickly make a bad situation worse. There are ways, however, that one can manage their council tax debt in an intelligent way and, possibly, even find ways to reduce the sum.
If you’re currently experiencing financial hardship, you may well be able to make arrangements to settle the debt in a way that will forestall any enforcement actions. You’ll have to contact your local authority to make such arrangements and you’ll have to make every effort to keep in contact with them to make sure that further action isn’t taken.
If you cannot pay the amount demanded, you’ll likely have to make arrangements to make installment payments at a lesser amount. Come up with a figure that meets two criteria to satisfy the local authority. One, it should be an amount that won’t result in the debt being carried over into the next financial year. Two, you’ll have to make certain, when making payments, that those payments are specified to be toward the year in which you’ve fallen behind. Failing to do so can result in bureaucratic bungles, such as having the payment applied to the current year’s debt and, thus, leaving the former debt unpaid.
If you’re single, you qualify for a discount and you need to make certain you’ve taken advantage of it. Not doing so constitutes putting additional hardships on yourself.
Remember that your council tax debt should be treated as your most important bill and should be paid off before any others are dealt with. Because of the legal fees and other difficulties this debt can generate, such as wage attachments and having property seized and sold, one needs to keep on top of it.
If the situation is completely unmanageable or you feel that you’re over your head in trying to rectify it, take advantage of the services of your local counselor. They can work with the authority to make sure that you remain in good standing, even if you can’t avoid having your council tax debt fall into arrears. Either way, make certain you pay off the delinquent sum within the next fiscal year to keep the situation as under control as possible.
