An Introduction to Bad Credit Repair Law
If you fall squarely into the subprime consumer category due to poor credit, rebuilding that credit is of vital importance to you. Without a good credit score, it can be difficult to enjoy your life. It can be almost impossible to get a home loan, an auto loan or even be extended a small line of credit with a credit card company. In short, your enjoyment of life is tremendously impacted. Bad credit repair law holds the potential to improve your life substantially. How does this law apply to you? What protections and benefits does credit repair law offer?
The most important benefit under bad credit repair law is an increase in your lending options. Basically, credit repair law endows you with legal rights that involve your credit report and what it shows to lenders. How does it work? Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you are entitled to quite a few benefits. These include disputing items on your credit report that you feel should not be there. What can be disputed?
Inaccurate Information – If inaccurate debt information is listed on your credit report, you can dispute it with the credit reporting agency.
Incomplete Information – If a debt is listed on your credit report with incomplete information, it can also be disputed with a credit reporting agency.
Unverifiable Debts – Any debts that are unverifiable can be disputed under bad credit repair law.
Disputing these items will require that you contact the credit reporting agency on whose report the item appears. There are three main credit agencies operating in the US, including Trans Union, Equifax and Experian. You must obtain a credit report from each agency, because different items may appear on each report. Thankfully, you are entitled to one free copy of your credit report from each agency each year. Some consumers may be entitled to more than one copy each year, depending on the state in which they live.
Once you have identified problematic items and disputed them with the credit reporting agency, the agency will investigate each item. If the claim proves to be false, it must be removed within 30 days. However, any accurate claims cannot be removed in this manner and must be removed by settling the debt or waiting until the debt expires, which can be a lengthy period. Under bad credit repair law, you still have considerable rights, but exercising them is up to you.
