Options for Affordable Health Insurance

Affordable health insurance is sometimes assumed to go hand-in-hand with useless health insurance, though this is not true. There are options out there for those who need health insurance but who don’t have a great deal of money.

The most affordable health insurance is that provided as a public service for those who live at or below the poverty line. You can investigate community clinics, colleges, hospitals and other providers to see if they offer these programs. Many of these organizations make an effort to help the community by making their services available to each and every person in need and these types of affordable health insurance, contrary to popular belief, are often quite good. In the most severe cases, one may be eligible for free care.

Mothers with or expecting children are eligible for a great many benefits where health insurance is concerned. Oftentimes, the state or federal government has programs that help women who can’t afford the medical costs associated with pregnancy get the care they need to ensure that both mother and child are healthy. For those who currently make a decent living but not enough to cover the costs of health insurance, there are affordable health insurance options that work on a “sliding scale” where the price of care is based on the individual’s ability to pay. These are excellent programs, overall, and there is no compromised quality where doctors, nurses or facilities are concerned.

Your employer may be able to offer affordable health insurance to their employees by purchasing in a “pool”. As with all commodities, the cost goes down as the amount of the commodity purchased goes up. For a particularly large company, the ability to offer employees affordable health insurance helps them maintain a competitive edge by allowing them to attract talented people to the firm.

Trade and labor unions often list providing their members with affordable health insurance as one of their most important missions. To that end, many unions offer excellent packages that offer broad coverage at low prices. Again, this affordability is allowed by the large number of people making a purchase as a unit, which drives the cost down. If you’re a member of a union, whether as a regular employee or an independent tradesperson, you should investigate your options.

Some private companies offer less comprehensive packages of affordable health insurance among their offerings. You may want to see if any special circumstances you have, such as being a student or other variables, will allow you to purchase discounted insurance. As with life insurance, young, healthy people will generally enjoy much better rates from private insurers than will older individuals or those with illnesses.
